The ATA has provided a response to the Australian Rail Industry Standards Association’s draft of the Rolling Stock Lighting and Visibility Standards (AS 7531).
The submission supports comprehensive lighting requirements for rolling stock, arguing for the following inclusions:
- Trains should have forward-facing flashing visibility beacons.
- Visibility beacons and forward visibility lights must be activated on approach to all level crossings.
- Train wagons should be fitted with side lighting.
- Reflectors should be of a higher standard.
The submission also identifies multiple adjustments to these requirements for improving road user and pedestrian safety.
